It’s time to channel your inner geek! The Chey-Fy Comic Expo is coming on Sept. 13-15 at the Plains Hotel and has expanded in its second year to include events at businesses in downtown Cheyenne.
“The Chey-Fy Comic Expo was created through the Small Business Hub to help raise money for the community for small business,” said Jon Puls Vice President of events for The Chey-Fy Comic Expo and the Small Business Hub. “Fifty percent of the profits that are made are given back to the Cheyenne Area small business grants.”
The Chey-Fy Comic Expo is a comic book and pop culture related, cosplay, anime, video game event.
There will also be vendors, products, displays and panels with costume and make-up artists and other specialists. “This is a smaller scale comic con,” Puls said.
This year’s Chey-Fy Comic Expo stars are; Martin Klebba from Pirates of the Caribbean
Dameon Clarke, who plays Handsome Jack in Borderlands video game and does voice over for the Dragon Ball Z anime cartoon, Lauren Landa who is the voice of Sailor Neptune in the Sailor Moon series as well as several other shows, Ron Fortier the veteran comic book creator of Green Hornet and Terminator Burning Earth with Alex Ross, Fortier also hosts the Airship Twenty Seven video podcast, Mike Baron is another star and he is a two-time Eisner award winner and is the writer for the Nexus comic books, the final star is Paul Noffsinger who is an illusionist of the Mystery Collection.
The purpose of the Cheyenne-Fy Comic Expo is to bring the community out to give kids and families something to do in Cheyenne that’s not Western based, Puls said.
“This gives everyone something to do that’s outside of the box,” Puls said. “We bring the stars in and that brings the public in. The stars are involved in the material and genres of things we are covering. This gives people a chance to meet the starts that they have liked as a young child.”
By having a comic con expo in Cheyenne it gives people a chance locally to meet some stars of the comic book scene.
“They don’t travel to Denver or the L.A. Comic Con,” Puls said. “It gives people a chance locally to come and meet the stars. It’s a good inspiration for kids as well, with all the video games and TV that they’re interested in. It gives them a chance to see it first hand.”
People who purchase the VIP pass get a lot of perks. All of the VIP events happen on Sept. 14.
“They get to have lunch with the stars at Capitol Cuisine,” Puls said. “We only have room for 50 VIP’s, so this gives 50 people a chance to do a Q&A session and say they had lunch with Lauren Landa, or Mike Baron.”
VIP’s also have a free gaming session at Olympus Games and a night time tour of the Masonic Temple Building. At midnight illusionist Paul Noffsinger will do a reading at the Masonic Temple for VIPS.
On Sept. 13 there is a Cosplay Karaoke at Danielmark’s Brewery and Tap Room where people dress up in their favorite Cosplay costume and sing karaoke. On Sept. 14, there is a Cosplay Nerd Ball at the Asher Upstairs and on Sept. 15 there is a Video Game afternoon at Flippers.
This is the second Chey-Fy Comic Expo. “The first one went well,” Puls said. “This year we tripled the size of the show and we brought in the small businesses we are supporting and helped the community grow with the event. We can’t have community without community.”
